About the Artist

Born in 1939 in Chicago, Peter Roth is a degreed chemical engineer. This technical background is readily apparent in the construction of his art .

Originally a photorealistic painter, he became fascinated by the reverse perspective paintings of Patrick Hughes and began to experiment.  A ready understanding of the construction and spatial requirements of reverse perspective made for an easy transition into this medium.

Peter is producing dramatic works that fascinates the viewer by creating the illusion of actually moving through a space. The imaginary setting is typically an art gallery with a collection of famous modern paintings.

His works are in private collections throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia and South America. Collectors often commission pieces featuring some of their favorite paintings. One collector relates that viewing her Roth is like visiting her personal gallery.

Roth has studied at the Illinois Institute of Technology, the Chicago Art Institute and with the renowned photorealistic marine artist Randall Scott.

Artist Statement

I want to create paintings that combine photo-realism with simulated motion. Reverse perspective is my current passion because it is the technique which seems best suited to accomplish this. I am also interested in creating the illusion of artificial lighting. The fact that one can lay down paint and make it seem that “the lights have been turned on” is fascinating.

I believe that each painting should be considered as a unique statement and be evaluated for its visual effect alone. No thought should be given to its method of execution. I want the viewer to have a “Wow!” experience, not just a “What a beautiful scene” experience.
