BIOGRAPHY

Internationally renowned artist Mackenzie Thorpe, was born into a large family in industrial Middlesbrough in the north of England in the 1950’s. From a young age, Mackenzie’s compulsion to draw set him apart from his peers, but it was this gift which was to ultimately give him a sense of identity and self. Struggling with undiagnosed dyslexia Mackenzie managed, against all the odds, to get himself into Art College and eventually in 1989 he risked everything, to follow his dream and fulfil his destiny to become a full time artist. Despite some difficult early years Mackenzie’s inspirational art did not go unnoticed and his work is now exhibited and collected avidly, around the world. His appeal is simple; his work is honest, truthful and totally unique. Over the years collectors have commented that they find his work, moving, inspirational, powerful, honest, stunning and so much more.

His artistic development continues, not in a neat step by step process, but rather as an unfolding and at times revisiting, exploration of style, technique and subject; as these three new releases demonstrate. 2010 has been a momentous year for Mackenzie, amongst other things he was commissioned to create a significant public sculpture for a hospital in Oklahoma, U.S.A. and is exhibiting in museums and galleries in the UK; USA; Japan and Australia. To complete an amazing 2010, the UK’s University of the Year 2009 (Teesside University), in recognition and acknowledgement of his outstanding contribution to the Arts, have awarded Mackenzie an honorary masters degree, Doctor of Arts (Hon DA).
