Karim Ghidinelli

Biography

Karim Ghidinelli was born in Brescia, a northern Italian city. At age eleven his family began to travel for extensive periods of time, no longer recreationally. They moved to Guinea Bissau, where they lived for a period of fourteen months.  Ghidinelli returned to Italy where he continued attending regular school, though his language skill had been much improved by the tempering experience. His views of the world began to change.

After a period of about one year, Ghidinelli and his family moved again, this time to Ethiopia. He lived in Addis Ababa for more than two years. Here he began to understand his passion for art, and started to read social symbolism much clearer then he ever could in the pampered society of Italy.

In Ethiopia Ghidinelli began attending English school, which allowed him to interact with students from a multitude of cultures, religions, races and nationalities. After Ethiopia Ghidinelli returned to Italy, where he attended The International School of Milan.

Explanation of Karim Ghidinelli's work:

The work is narrative, at all aspects, from formal to personal. The choice of materials is narrative, aluminum is an archival metal, difficult to melt; and with the industrial qualities of resistance intrinsic to all metals. Oil paint is traditional and warm and offers a clear contradiction with the choice of metal; a combination of cold industrial and warm organic aesthetic.  The engraving itself recalls of ancient drawings or stone carvings, the print is reminiscent of prehistoric passage of life. All elements work cohesively towards an assertion of presence in time.

The print is an indelible proof of self, how that self is asserted is manifested through the strength of the written word and self expression. The work can either be very political or intimate, depending on the subject writing, whether myself or a donor of print.  My choice is socio-political, I appreciate the dynamic nature of history and society around me and choose to immortalize its changes and ramifications through my vision within my work. When a third person enters the realm of immortalization the work adopts his or her characteristics and all the other elements seem to pivot around the narration of choice. The work becomes self, any self, from mine to the many surrounding me, remaining always integral to its original mission statement of self and outer discovery, mutating into its future forms though maintaining a direct link to all its preceding manifestations.

A classic example of form and function or beauty and concept coexisting.
