Artist Statement

Christina Narwicz
Artists’s statement

My work as a painter is shifting and my practice is ever changing. The work is tentative like our ecosystems. I explore the unspoken languages that exist in the natural world and approach notions of conservation and ecology in my work.  By approaching these subjects through dreams and memories I reach back and look forward into other spaces and realms to make-work.  Although there is decision making involved I try to get away from too much thought and trust instinct.
Looking for a new perspective and still keeping my underlying intuitive process is the goal. I emphasize the elements that we all react to without any conscious knowledge, the semiotics of our biological programming that is connected to all other things both living and inert. I am looking deeper to activate awareness about the fragility of all systems. As climate changes so does the delicate interconnectedness our earth.

Biography

Christina Narwicz bases much of her work on the natural world. Although often abstracted, the painter’s organic themes clearly reference botany, the Caribbean Islands, the constantly changing environment as well as her own garden. Narwicz has exhibited nationally and internationally in both solo and group shows at venues such as Artemesia Gallery (Chicago, IL) Galerie Shulgasse (Wurzburg, Germany) Onessimo Fine Art (Palm Beach Gardens FL)and Anderson O'Brien Fine Art  (Omaha, NE), among others. Her paintings have been featured in publications such as Metropolitan Home, Omaha Magazine, the Briar Cliff Review and Inspire Living magazine. Awarded an Artist-in-Residence at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Omaha, NE, she has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Mid America Arts Alliance as well two Individual Artist Fellowship awards from the Nebraska Arts Council. She was also a nominee for the Joan Mitchell Foundation grant in 2013. Narwicz earned her BFA from Alfred University, New York State College of Ceramics and currently lives in Omaha, Nebraska.
